From the delights of Disney to the Phantom of the Opera, the Lourdes Brass Band under the conductor Mr Harry Kelly took the audience on a tour of the Musicals at their recent free Concert in the Westcourt Hotel. Kicking the show off with a selection from "Porgy and Bess", the Band took a trip through the show stopping hits of Broadway and the west End, including "The Lion King", and "Les Mis". The concert featured soloists Leeanne Mathews with a fine performance of "Over the Rainbow", Mark Newman on Cornet fronted "Dont Cry for Me Argentina" from Evita, while John Kelly had the audience swinging with his version of " The Bare Necessities" Younger members of the band performed a selection from the Sound od Music, impressionf the crowd with their rendition of "Edelweiss". The Band will perform in Townley Hall at "Arts in Action" on Monday 2nd June under the Baton of Mr Mark Shortt.

Thanks to Drogheda Concentrates, the world renowned Steve Sykes and the Lourdes Brass Band will preform in the Augustinian Church on Sunday evening 7th of October at 7pm, and admission is FREE. The concert sponsored by Drogheda Concentrates as is the culmination of a series of Music Workshops held by sykes with the Lourdes Brass Band. This is Mr Sykes third year at the helm as part of Drogheda Concentrates 'Masters in Brass'. Previous course directors to visit the Lourdes BRass Band included Frand Renton, James Shepard,Alan Morrison, Toby Hoddson and Mark Wilkinson. Steve Skyes last gave a recital with the Lourdes Brass band in the Westcourt Hotel last October. Steve's musical roots are firmly based in Yorkshire brass band-in 1978 he accepted an invitation to join the famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band as Principal Tuba and Soloist. With Grimthorpe he preformed as soloist throughout Europe and Ausrralia. During this period Steve was awarded the prestigious title of @Granada Television Soloist of the Year'. In 2002 he presented a solo recital in London's prestigious Albert Hall. Steve has appeared as guest artist with many famous ensembles including the U.S Army Orchestra, HM Royal Marines, the Norwegian Navy Band, the Netherlands BRass Ensemble, the Canadian Air Force Band, Chicago Staff Band and UNC Symphonic Wind Ensemble. He has performed as soloist at eh world renowned MidWest Band and Orchestra Clinic (Chicago)- sharing the stage with jazz greats Bill Watrous and Arturo Scandoval. The Summer workshops, has also been very beneficial to the Band's progress, and on Sunday evening the Lourdes Brass Band will perform under the Baton of both Mr Steve Sykes and their resident conductoe Harry Kelly. The band are currently the South of Iteland Champioship winners, and are recruiting new members on Tuesday evening at the premises on Bachelors Lane, off Shop Street. The 50 strong team of band and supporters travelled to Clonakilty, West Cork to defend their title won in 2005 and 2006 at the 28th Annual band Championships. This year competition attracted seventeen entries from all parts of the country as well as bands from Northern Ireland and Germany. Under the baton of conductor Mr.Mark Shortt, the Lourdes Band presented a top class entertaining programme which included the march “Simoraine”, “I will Follow him” from Sister Act featuring the band’s trombone section Danny Black, Kieron Cruise, and Robbie Tiernan, and also performed Duke Ellington’s “Caravan”. Soloist Mark Newman on cornet gave a magnificent rendition of the slow melody “Maid of the Moor” which both adjudicators greatly approved of. The Band closed their Performance with the cracking Greek air – “Zorba’s Dance”. This was the bands first competition performance under Mr. Shortt, who carried on trhe winning way of resident conductor Mr.Harry Kelly who led the Band to their previous wins. The championships were adjudicated by Dr. Joseph Ryan, Army School of Music and Ms. Brid Grant, Director of Music at DIT both of whom spoke highly of the standard and quality of the bands performance. The Lourdes Band were awarded first prize ahead of the Waldaschaff brass from Germany, and the Ardee Concert Band who took third place. Making it an unprecedented three successive win in the competitions history. The Band’s next venture will be their Drogheda Concentrates MasterClass and concert with world renown Tuba soloist with Mr. Steve Sykes on 6th/7th October.

Morgan Griffiths was born in Batley, West Yorkshire in 1971 and is revered within the brass band world for his classic Euphonium sound and style which follows in the line of traditional Yorkshire masters, not least his tutor from the age of 14, Morgan was the youngest player to be appointed Principal Euphonium of the famous Black Dyke Mills Band where he established an internationally acclaimed reputation both as a soloist and principal player. In 1992 Morgan accepted the invitation to become Principal Euphonium of the Yorkshire Building Society Band, and played a major role in the band's meteoric rise. He is one of the most successful Euphonium players of his generation winning Two National's, Three British Opens, Seven European and Three All England Masters Championships, plus the 4-Bars-Rest award for Outstanding soloist and Player of the Year 2002. Morgan has toured extensively and has been a guest soloist in Japan, - Switzerland, Norway and the Netherlands. He is Manager of the Leeds based Musical Instrument retailers Band Supplies. Morgan will be working with the Band pre-Championships in April ‘06
